| Koalas Honored at All-Sports Banquet |
The Fighting Koalas athletic teams were honored at the 2006 All Sports Banquet held on Wednesday, April 26, at 6:30 pm in the Student Union on the Columbia College campus. The guest speaker was former member of the Fighting Koalas tennis and cross country teams and 2001 graduate, Lori Pearigen Mauldin. Mauldin earned numerous awards during her years at Columbia College, including the prestigious A.O. Duer Award presented by the NAIA to student-athletes at member schools who excell academically. Mauldin, who attended the Medical University of South Carolina after graduating from Columbia College, spoke about lessons she learned through participating in athletics, including conquering her fear of failure and valuing her relationships with teammates, friends and family. Mauldin is currently working as a physician's assistant at Carolinas Dermatology.
Head soccer coach, Patrick Faulds announced the soccer team awards, that were presented by Michael Nunley, volunteer assistant coach. The Best Offense Award went to sophomore Allison Lord, the team's top scorer whose two-year goal total surpasses the total goals scored for the rest of the team from the last six years of competition. The Best Defense Award was presented to sophomore, Aisha Jackson, and the Coach's Award went to junior co-captain, Danielle Killgore.
Head volleyball coach, Eric Shick, presented sophomore Sarah Scoggins with the Most Improved Player award, and co-captain Donee Taylor, a junior, recieved the Coach's Award. Freshman setter Brittany Strickland was named the team's Most Valuable Player.
Head tennis coach, James Morrison, presented his only graduating senior, Jennifer Troutman, with the team's Most Valuable Player award. Elizabeth Barrett, a sophomore, earned Coach's Award honors and junior Christine Bush was named Most Improved.
Head coach Joe Rice presented the basketball team's Most Valuable Player award to junior and co-captain, Ashley Watson. Santanna Shropshire, a freshman, earned the Sportsmaship Award and Sarah Scoggins was presented the Coach's Award.
Lyndsay Wheeler, head athletic trainer, presented the Iron Koala Award to sophomore basketball player, Denitra Parker, for making the most progress and putting forth the most effort in strength and conditioning.
The Lucille Godbold Scholarship Awards were presented to Donee Taylor and Ashley Watson. Crisna Matheson, a sophomore soccer player, was awarded the Erma Kizer Rushton Scholarship. Faculty Athletics Representative Dr. Laurie Hopkins presented the Academic Excellence Award to freshman volleyball player, Lauren Bach, who currently has the highest GPR in the department. Randy Epting, Columbia College Grounds Supervisor, was given the Athletic Appreciation Award, and the Number One Fan Award went to senior, Pandora Johnson.
Finally, the Athletic Medallion Award, presented to the athlete who best exemplifies leadership, sportsmanship, respect on the playing field and the classroom was presented to Jennifer Troutman from the tennis team.
