The Fighting Koalas’ volleyball team opened their SSAC adventure this year with a 3-0 win at Brenau University Saturday afternoon.
The Koalas started off strong to take the first game 30-19 and then weathered a few Brenau runs to win the next two games 30-24, 30-23. Leading the offense for Columbia College were Freshman Courtney Green and Senior Ashley Watson. Green posted 13 kills, 2 aces, 9 digs, and 1 block. Watson followed with 8 kills on 17 attempts and 1 block. Freshman Chelsea Brant and Junior Lauren Bach also contributed 8 kills each.
Coach Solomon said, “I am very pleased with the level of play this early in the year. We played very strong in the first game and then overcame some uncharacteristic missed serves in the next two games. Brittany ran a very good offense and we got great contributions from everyone.” Junior setter Brittany Strickland recorded a game high 33 assists and libero Danielle Gutierrez chipped in a team high 14 digs.
With the win the Koalas are 4-4 on the season and 1-0 in SSAC play. The Koalas visit North Greenville University Wednesday and play host to Lee University next Saturday at 2PM.
