Columbia College Featured on Southern States Showcase
COLUMBIA, S.C. - Columbia College Athletics will be featured on this week’s episode of Southern States Showcase, which airs on Fox Sports South network Wednesdays at 6:00 p.m. (EST). The Southern States Showcase highlights member athletes, coaches, and schools from the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC). The Fighting Koalas of Columbia College will be featured in the April 6th episode as the school spotlight of the week.
Representatives of Columbia College’s administration, athletic coaching staff, and student-athletes were interviewed about the NAIA’s Champions of Character program. The Champions of Character program adopted by the NAIA stresses the following five core values: Integrity, Respect, Responsibility, Sportsmanship, and Servant Leadership. The broadcast highlights how Columbia College’s athletic department infuses those five core values throughout athletic seasons of competition. The Champions of Character program, which is designed to cover issues on and off the playing field, is a particular emphasis among Columbia College student-athletes.
As a result, the college’s athletic department has been recognized by the NAIA. The Showcase features assistant athletic director and head volleyball coach, Brian Solomon, who discusses the sportsmanship awards earned by the athletic department and the Fighting Koalas volleyball team. Solomon, along with all Columbia College coaches, has completed the Character Driven Coaching initiative provided by the NAIA.
Head basketball coach, Maria Audas, describes the core values of the program and the role community service plays as teams look to apply the core value of servant leadership. Columbia College not only has been awarded the sportsmanship award for the SSAC, but has also been named a Five-Star Institution for its outreach and efforts under the Champions of Character program.
