Koalas Sweep Brewton-Parker
COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Fighting Koalas have won four of their past six game, including a two game sweep of Brewton-Parker College Tuesday afternoon. Highlighting the victories was a two hit shutout thrown by freshman Samantha Santoro, who scored the only run of the game on a solo homerun in the third inning. Columbia captured game two in an exciting come from behind victory to win 5-3.
The shutout-pitcher homerun feat was something Columbia College benefited from over the weekend. Freshman Kelsey Nichols managed to do the same thing in a 5-0 victory over Southern Wesleyan. However, Tuesday’s home run was the only run on the board for either team. Santoro gave up 2 hits in 7 innings and struck out 5.
Tuesday’s second game saw defensive mishaps give Brewton Parker a two-run lead going into Columbia’s half of the 5th inning. The Koalas strung together a couple walks and 4 hits to score 4 runs and capture the eventual 5-3 victory. Casey Davenport and Sarah Gibson each drove in two runs. Nichols threw 7 innings and gave up only 1 earned run.
Columbia (8-16, 9-19) will travel to nationally ranked Shorter College and Lee University for a Friday and Saturday series.
