COLUMBIA, S.C. – Columbia College Women's Basketball team snagged a tight 77-72 victory over AAC opponent Allen University (12-16, 8-13 AAC) at home on Saturday afternoon. The local rivalry brought in a crowd to watch the Columbia teams battle for the win.
Columbia College (3-21, 3-18 AAC) was a powerhouse and lead the first quarter by 8 points with 8:43 on the clock to finish 17-13 shooting 28% from the field and sinking 36% of their 3-pointers. The Koalas shot 90% from the line in the first quarter to solidify their start but Allen wasn't ready to give up. The Yellow Jackets brought 22 points in the second quarter to Columbia's 16, enough to lead the score 35-33 at the half. The half was closed with a rocket shot by freshman Victoria Williams (FR/Orangeburg, SC) which nailed a buzzer beating 3-pointer from the midcourt line.
An early rush by the Yellow Jackets pushed the point gap to 7 with 3:18 left in the third. The quarter ended neck to neck with both Columbia and Allen scoring 17 to tighten the score to 52-50 at the start of the fourth.
Columbia would not give in. The Koalas out maneuvered the Yellow Jackets in a series of rebounds resulting in back to back baskets to take the lead with only a few minutes left. The Koalas outshot Allen from the line again in the second half with 70% on free throws to end the game with 76% over Allen's 58%. Columbia pulled ahead to take the victory 77-72 in the final minutes.
The game was tied for a total of 5 times and the lead changed 6 times before the Koalas were able to pull out the win.
Columbia College's Briana Johnson (SR/Columbia, SC) totaled 18 points and 4 assists to lead the team in points. She was aided by fellow senior Katie Kopp (SR/Charleston/SC) who pulled down 11 rebounds.
Columbia College's end of season game will be this Saturday, February the 18th at home against AAC opponent Milligan College. This will also be Senior Night.
