David Pennell joined the Athletic Staff at Columbia College as Head Golf Coach in July, 2013, bringing with him a wealth of experience and knowledge.
David credits his father with being the most influential person in his life, who introduced him to the game of golf as early as age 5. His dad became a PGA Professional about the time his own military career was ending. David’s desire was to follow in his father’s footsteps, which was the beginning of what has become a lengthy career.
During the early years, David played collegiate golf at UNC-Asheville, and it was in 1977 that David became a PGA Professional. During the ensuing years, David’s career in coaching began in many different sports including basketball, football, and golf in both middle school and high school settings.
David’s collegiate coaching career began in the year 2000. The many teams he coached received numerous accolades which include but are not limited to the following:

10 All Conference student-athletes in AAC
1 NAIA All-Region XII student-athlete in Women’s Golf
6 All Academic AAC student-athletes
5 time NAIA Champion of Character in the AAC – 2006, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2013
2007 AAC Conference Champions in Women’s Golf
AAC Runner-up in Women’s Golf – 2008, 2009, 2010
NAIA Region XII Champions in Women’s Golf – 2007
NAIA National Champion of Character Runner-up in Women’s Golf – 2012
David’s professional accomplishments are many, including:
Starting 14th year as a collegiate golf coach, 1st year at Columbia College
34-year Retired Class A life member of the PGA
Past Tournament Chairman, Men’s Golf in AAC – 2001-2009
Past Tournament Chairman, Women’s Golf in AAC – 2007-2011
Past NAIA Rater for Men’s Golf in the AAC from 2003-2010
Current Rater for Women’s Golf in the AAC from 2007 to Present
Served on Tournament Committee for the NAIA Women’s National Championship, 2011-2013
2007 AAC/NAIA Region XII Coach of the Year in Women’s Golf
David stated, “It is an honor and privilege to be able to coach at a beautiful college like Columbia. I am very blessed by God to be a part of this great Athletic Department.”
David comes to Columbia from the Asheville, NC area. He has 3 children: Charles David Pennell, who is 33 and lives in Harrisburg; also Stephanie Diane Pennell, 22, and Ryan Daniel Pennell, 20, of Fletcher. David also has one grandchild, Charles Beckett Pennell, who is 2 years-old and lives in Harrisburg.

Keith Davis is entering his 2nd year as the assistant golf coach at Columbia College. Keith came to Columbia after serving as the Assistant Golf Coach at the Lugoff-Elgin High School from 2009-2012. He is a long time resident of the Columbia area.
Coach Davis commented on coaching, “I came to coaching a little late in life but I love it very much. I feel like I am making a difference in these young ladies lives.”
Coach Davis and his wife Gail along with their four children; Dylan, Clayton, Nash and Paris live near Lake Wateree, near Lugoff, SC. Keith and his family are members of the Ebenezer United Methodist Church.
