Soccer Picks Up 3-0 Victory Over St. Andrews
COLUMBIA, S.C. -
The Fighting Koalas got back into
the win column with a confident 3-0 victory over visiting St.
Andrews Presbyterian University on Wednesday evening at home at
Younts Stadium. Columbia, who had lost three in a row prior to the
contest, picked up their eighth win on the season, to guarantee a
winning season for the first time in school history.
Columbia got on the board in the first half, as Jessica Martinez was the first Koala to break into double figures for goals on the season. Clare Williamson played a blind reverse pass to Martinez, who fired the ball into the top corner, giving her ten goals on the year. The assist was Williamson's fifteenth on the season in just seventeen games.
After halftime, the Koalas doubled their lead, again through Martinez. Alex Hallows continued her return from injury with a nice slotted pass to Martinez, who was able to poke the ball past the stranded St. Andrews keeper to make it 2-0. Minutes later, Martinez completed her hat-trick to take her to twelve goals on the year, as she was fouled in the box and duly converted the resulting penalty kick for the final 3-0 margin of victory.
Elise Grider and Lauren Zarefoss combined for the shutout in goal, while stellar play from defenders Lilli Neal, Taylor Willis, Taylor Coulter, Heather Shumpert, and Chelsea Whiteman limited the Knights attack to very few chances on goal.
Columbia returns home for the regular season finale and senior day on Saturday, October 29th, when they face Union College at 3 PM in the final AAC regular season match for both teams. Columbia will be the #6 seed for the upcoming conference tournament, and will face Milligan College in the first round on Saturday, November 5th.
