Megan Brown ’09 Receives Red Cross/NAIA Scholarship

COLUMBIA, S.C.: Student-athlete Megan Brown, a senior, was presented with a $2,000 scholarship recognizing her participation in the American Red Cross (ARC)/National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Youth Leadership Program and her dedication to the Red Cross mission of saving lives. In addition to completing the Youth Leadership Program, Megan has organized three successful campus blood drives.

Megan is a Columbia native majoring in Child and Family Studies, with an emphasis in early care and education. She has received the Most Improved Player Award and Coach's Award in tennis.

American Red Cross representatives, including Brian Hamil, National Chair for Biomedical Services, arrived from Washington, D.C., on March 30 for a special courtside check presentation just before Columbia College's final home tennis match of the season with Emmanuel College. Columbia College also extended warm welcome to ARC representatives Jamie B. Muldrow, Communications Manager; Cheryl Austin, Donor Recruitment; Rolanda Hawkins, Donor Recruitment; and Thomas Bryson, Board Chairman.

Megan was nominated and selected to participate in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity because of her strong leadership skills and her commitment to the NAIA's core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship.

The American Red Cross partnership with NAIA is designed to inspire and motivate a new and diverse generation of Red Cross volunteers and leaders who will support and continue the mission of the Red Cross to save lives by assuring a safe and adequate blood supply for the hospitals and patients served in their communities. The program also receives support from a generous grant from State Farm Insurance.
