Barn Burner Against Brenau
The Columbia College volleyball team made an improbable comeback Wednesday night against Brenau University in a five set victory.
Columbia College impressed the home crowd with a fourth set comeback, down 24-19. The whistle was blown and game was called over when the up official called the ball out; however, after consulting with the other officials the call was corrected to give the Koalas one last chance. Sophomore Liz Richardson went back to the service line and capitalized, scoring six straight points to gain a 26-24 victory.
The fourth set momentum carried into the fifth set when Columbia College jumped to an early 8-3 lead, but Brenau battled back and saved 3 match points until freshman Tara Prater got her 20th kill to seal the match 15-13. Freshman Aarika Munro added 17 kills, hitting .206 with 14 digs.
Sophomore Erica Allman recorded a season high 29 digs in the contest to go along with 2 aces. Allman said, "The team fought really hard and we pushed even though they had game point. It has been really fun this year to see how much we stay together and battle for each game."
Assistant Coach Katie Welsh said, "Brenau's defense was so strong tonight, I was very impressed that we battled through."
The win puts Columbia College at 2-1 in the SSAC and 8-2 overall. The Fighting Koalas will next host Reinhardt College on Family Day, September 19 at 2 pm.
