Koalas Pick up Two Conference Wins at Home

The Columbia College Volleyball Team picked up 2 major conference wins at home this weekend defeating top ranked Union on Friday night in a thrilling 5 set match followed by a victory over Bluefield College on Saturday afternoon in 4 sets.  The Koalas have now won their last 6 matches in a row, all conference matches, and have now moved into a tie for 3rd place in the AAC standings.

The Koalas avenged 2 straight set losses to Union and Bluefield earlier in the year on the road and the win against Union marks the first time in many years the Koalas have defeated the traditional conference power.  The Koalas jumped out to a 2 sets to 0 lead in the match by scores of 27-25 and 25-21.  Union responded by taking the next 2 sets 25-20 and 25-21.  In an epic 5th set, the Koalas faced significant deficits of 10 – 5 and 13 -10 in the 15 point set.  Down 13-10, senior setter Melissa Dixon closed out the set on a 5 – 0 serving run to complete the comeback and the victory.

On Saturday, the Koalas squared off with a much improved Bluefield squad the proved quite feisty.  Columbia raced out to 1st and 2nd set victories by scores of 25-23 and 25-16.  Bluefield responded in the match by taking the 3rd set 25-13.  In a back and forth 4th set affair, Columbia held a late 21-17 lead only to have Bluefield fight back to tie the score at 22.  The Koalas buckled down from there and closed things out with a 25-23 set win and the match.

Columbia now travels to Milligan for a Monday afternoon match-up at 4 pm.
