Koala Volleyball Picks Up 2 Conference Road Wins

The Columbia College Volleyball Team took to the road yesterday against Point University and Bluefield College at Point University and came away with 2 key wins.  The Koalas began the day taking on Bluefield and defeating the Rams 3-1.  Set scores were 25-21, 9-25,25-20-25-19.  Columbia began by taking the first set 25-20.  Bluefield responded by taking a commanding lead in the second set and never looking back in finishing at 25-9 to level the match at 1 each.  The Koalas responded by taking control of the match in the third set 25-20 and 2-1 lead in the match.  Columbia finished off the fourth set in dominating fashion on their way to a 25-19 set win and match win.  Senior middle Moriah Brookins led the way with 13 kills on an errorless 19 attempts for an impressive .684 attack percentage.  Senior Outside Hitter Kara Anderson tallied 10 kills for a .364 attack percentage.  Seniors Richelle Prijic and Caylee Antilley also added to the offensive onslaught with 9 and kills respectively.  First Year Setter Anastasia Brackin directed the offense with 39 assists.  Senior Libero Mackenzie Wood anchored the defense with 18 digs. 


Columbia turned right around to square off against the home team Point, who defeated Bluefield in a 5 set win in the early match.  Point flexed their home muscles in the first set as the Koalas got off to a slow start and dropped set 1 25-20.  Columbia rebounded to take the second set 25-20 to even the match.  Point defended their home turf in the 3rd set taking that one 25-20 and 2-1 lead in the match.  Intensity was cranked up in set 4 in a back and forth affair all the way through and staring up at a match point deficit at 24-23, it was the koalas turn to start their comeback and stave off elimination. The Koalas came out on top 29-27 to force the deciding 5th set and shock the frenzied Point home fans.  It was all Koalas in the 5th set racing out to a 8 – 4 lead at the side change.  Columbia maintained its lead all the way through to match point at 14-10.  A slight comeback by Point forced a timeout at 14-12 but a Point attack error sealed the comeback win for the lady Koalas and a successful day.  Senior Kara Anderson led the attack with 19 kills and 6 service aces.  Richelle Prijic and Moriah Brookins also had great performances with 11 and 10 kills respectively with Brookins adding in 2 service aces.  Setter Anastasia Brackin handed out 43 assists and added 13 digs as well.  Mackenzie Wood captained the back row with 14 digs. 


Columbia now moves to 6-8 on the year and 4-1 in conference play.  The Koalas are back in action Tuesday in the friendly confines of the Godbold Center against new local conference rival Allen.  Match time is 6:30 and come on out and participate in the free t-shirt serving contest between the second and third set!
