COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Columbia College men's soccer team opened their season on Wednesday evening defeating visiting foe Johnson & Wales University (N.C.) 1-0 from Younts Stadium.
A beautiful goal on a header from freshman forward Jacob Madeiros in the 25th minute gave CC the early 1-0 advantage. His shot came off a rebound of a missed shot from another Koala.
Columbia then took the 1-0 lead into the break as the shot count remained tied at five apiece. JWU fell to 0-2.
A physical game led to 9 yellow cards handed out and 21 total fouls while senior keeper Mathias Gravesen saved all four shots on goal that he faced including a big save in the final minutes to keep the Koalas in front. The shot count was also even in the second half at four attempts apiece.
The Koalas, 1-0, will next open AAC conference play on Saturday at 1:30 pm hosting Tennessee Wesleyan.
