Men's Tennis Defeats JWU in Season Opener
COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Columbia College men's tennis team defeated Johnson & Wales University (NC) 6-3 in their season opener at home on Friday afternoon at the Koala Courts.
Columbia went out and earned the thrilling doubles point by winning two of three doubles matches. First, the top team of senior Ozzy Bosch and sophomore Gabriel Kian won 6-1 before the #2 team of junior Jonah Haller and freshman Noah Snipes fell 4-6.
Earning the decisive doubles point was the #3 team of German natives, freshmen Len Spanier and Torben Paas, pictured, winning 7-6 and 7-3 in the thrilling match.
In singles, the Koalas went on to win four of the six bouts led by Bosch's dominating 6-1, 6-1 win at the top spot of singles. Snipes then won 6-0, 6-1 at the six spot to give CC a 3-0 lead.
Kian then won 6-1, 6-4 at the 4-spot to clinch the win for the Koalas. Spanier then added another win for CC as he rallied from an early 0-6 deficit to win 7-5 and then 14-12 in the tiebreaker.
Suffering a narrow defeat was senior Owen Brumfield at the 5-spot going down 6-7, 6-7 and 4-7 in the tiebreakers. Haller then won his opening set 6-4 at the 2-spot before trailing 4-5 in the second and eventually retiring when the match was clinched.
The Koalas (2-0) were next scheduled to host Belmont Abbey College (NC) on Monday afternoon but that was postponed due to weather and will be made up at a later date.
