Columbia Softball Spring Break Wrap-Up
Columbia College Splits with Virginia Intermont
Sophomore Erin Walker didn't get much run support versus Virginia Intermont but she didn't need much. She pitched a full game throwing 11 strikeouts carrying the Koalas to a 2-1 win over the Cobras. Columbia College's runs came in the first inning on a two-run double by Junior Rochelle Lyda. Virginia Intermont's one run came off a solo homerun in the fourth inning by Tamara Campbell.
In game two The Cobras Katie Smith hit a three-run homerun off of Senior Brittany Barr in the first inning and never surrendered the lead, scoring two more runs in the fourth inning. The Koalas scored in the first inning on an RBI single by Rochelle Lyda and in the second inning sophomore Ashley Cox scored on a Cobra's error. Columbia College would not score again after the second inning.
Barr and Knipp win big over Benedict College 8-0 and 13-1
The Fighting Koalas captured a blowout 8-0 win in five innings over the Tigers.
Columbia College scored four runs in the fifth on an error, a two-run double by junior Hailey Grimoskas, and an RBI single by senior Brittany Padgett. Senior Kelsey Pruitt and another extra-base hit game doubling in the first inning and tripling in the fourth.
Senior pitcher Lindsey Knipp looked great on the mound, giving up only one hit, allowing zero earned runs and walks while striking out seven in the five inning shutout. Freshman Hallie Jolly added to the run support in the fourth inning scoring sophomore Ashley Cox. Pruitt's triple followed plating Jolly and Padgett.
Senior Brittany Barr got the game two win striking out six Tigers and allowing only four hits and five walks in the 13-1 five inning victory. The Koalas scored 10 runs in the first two innings giving Barr a comfortable cushion early on. Grimoskas had a great game at the plate having three RBI and two hits. She homered in the second inning and had a single later in the game.
Columbia College drops two to Point University
In game one led by four runs in the sixth inning, but Point University put together an amazing comeback to steal the victory, 7-4. In the third inning Senior Kelsey Pruitt singled plating freshman Kylie Godley. Junior Rochelle Lyda hit a three run homerun for the Koalas in the same inning scoring Alyssa Ortiz and Kelsey Pruitt. The Point Skyhawks didn't score until the seventh inning. They scored seven runs on three doubles, an error, and an RBI single.
Despite out hitting the Skyhawks, the Koalas also dropped game two, losing 5-3. Lyda had another amazing game going a perfect 4-4 with four singles on the day. She hit safely in the first, fourth, fifth and seventh innings. Columbia College took an early lead in the first scoring one run on Lyda's first single of the day. Point took the final lead in the third inning scoring two runs on an error by sophomore Ashley Cox.
Koalas win two AAC games over the Cavs
Columbia College jumped on Montreat College early in game one in a 10-7 win in seven innings, scoring five runs in the first inning. Junior Bre Shearin tallied three RBI on a first inning homerun answering the Cavaliers' single run in the first. In the second inning the Koalas scored two more runs. The Cavs scored three times in the third inning closing the gap to a 7-4 deficit. Sophomore Erin Walker was able to get the Cav's to fly out ending the threat.
The Koalas were not deterred by the rally, they answered with three runs in the fifth inning. The difference was too much for Montreat and the Koalas went on the win 10-7 in seven innings. Erin Walker got the win throwing seven innings and fanning 7 Cavalier batters.
The Koalas won the second game 5-0 with the help of freshman Kylie Godley's bat. Godley went 2-3 with a single and a homerun to lead Columbia College over Montreat. Senior Brittany Barr got the win over the Cavs. Pitching was key for the Koalas, Seniors Barr and Lindsey Knipp combined for a seven-inning, one hit shutout. Barr struck out two while only allowing three walks in six innings of work. Knipp got the save striking out one, allowing two walks and no hits. Sophomore Ashley Cox added to Columbia College's total with an RBI double then scoring on a single by Senior Kelsey Pruitt.
