Softball Wins Season Opener In Record Fashion Behind Walker

Columbia College Softball won both games in its 2014 home opener over the visiting William Peace University Lady Pacers.  Sophomore Erin Walker led the Koalas in their 6-1 victory over the Lady Pacers in game one.  The right-handed pitcher threw a school record of 14 strikeouts in 7 innings, breaking the previous record of 10, which she held.

Senior Kelsey Pruitt was the spark for the Koalas at the plate, going 2-3 with one RBI and scoring twice.  William Peace scored its only run in the fourth inning on a solo homerun by Jennibeth Burge.  Columbia College scored four runs in the fifth inning on two doubles and an RBI single by Junior Breanne Shearin.

Four first-inning runs helped the Koalas to a 5-2 victory in game two.  Junior catcher Alyssa Ortiz started the rally with a solo homerun in the first inning.  She added on to her hits tally with a double in the fifth inning.  Senior Lindsey Knipp earned the win for the Koalas allowing two runs in the third inning and giving up only one walk.    Junior Hailey Grimoskas got the save on Sunday keeping William Peace hitless over two innings, allowing no earned runs and no walks.

Columbia College’s next contest is against Georgia Gwinnett on Saturday Feb 15th at Sutton Softball Field at 2pm.
