LITTLE RIVER, S.C. - The Columbia College Softball team rolled to two wins over Div. III schools on the strength of strong pitching on the first day of the Fastpitch Dreams Myrtle Beach Classic on Thursday.
The Koalas improve to 9-7 on the season and will next continue their Myrtle Beach trip with games against Div. III opponents, Grove City College (Pa.) and Hilbert College (N.Y.) on Friday beginning at 10:00 am.
Columbia received standout pitching performances from starters Ally Boyd in game one to defeat St. Elizabeth's University (NJ) 5-1 and junior Maddie Vaughn in game two to shut out Bay Path University (MA) 3-0.
Boyd (1-2), a senior, tossed 5 and 2/3 scoreless innings allowing just two hits with two walks and a strikeout while freshman reliever Nealy Lockner walked four and allowed one run on zero hits with a strikeout over the final 1 and 1/3 innings. Vaughn (5-3) then pitched a complete game 2-hit shutout over Bay Path walking only two and striking out seven to get the win in game two.
In the opening game, CC got on the board in the first inning on a double steal with sophomore catcher Reagan Kelly stealing second and junior infielder Joni Littlejohn stealing home. An RBI triple from outfielder Takeirra Bakken in the 4th made it 2-0 while sophomore 3B Elaina Seymour's RBI single followed to make it 3-0. Kelly's RBI single in the 5th made it 4-0 before she came around to score on an SEU error. Kelly led the offense with two hits while junior SS Ashlynn Wolff, DP Karmen Christie, and junior LF Brooke Farrell also recorded hits for the Koalas.
During game two, the Koala offense was led by RBI singles from Seymour in the fourth and senior catcher Jenna Holder in the 7th while Littlejohn also recorded an RBI double in the sixth. Littlejohn led the team with three hits, finishing just a homer shy of hitting for the cycle, while also stealing two bases and scoring a run while infielder Brooke Miller stole a base, scored a run and walked. Seymour and Holder also recorded two hits apiece.
