Lady Koala Tennis Sweeps D-3 NC Foes over Weekend
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Columbia College women's tennis team went 2-0 over the weekend defeating both of their D-3 foes in North Carolina. The Koalas first defeated Salem College 6-1 on Saturday afternoon before crushing Meredith College 7-0 in Raleigh on Sunday morning.
Columbia won 2 out of 3 doubles matches against Salem as senior Natalia Diaz and sophomore Rachel Thompson won 6-0 at the two line while junior Vienne Geren and sophomore Camryn McCutchen won 6-1 at #3 doubles. CC's top doubles team of sophomore Ana Ribeiro and senior Aniya Sims then fell 7-6 in their thrilling doubles match, but CC still led 1-0 after doubles.
During singles, Columbia won five of the six matches led by Ribeiro at #2 singles winning 6-0, 6-4 while Sims won at #3 singles 6-3, 6-2. Rachel Thompson then won 6-0, 6-1 at #5 singles before Geren and freshman Bayla Burgey each won third set tiebreakers at #4 and #6 singles respectively. Geren won by scores of 6-1, 6-7, 10-7 while Burgey won 3-6, 6-2, 10-2.
RALEIGH, N.C. - In the shutout win over Meredith, the Koalas were led in doubles by Sims and Ribeiro winning 6-1 at #1 doubles while Diaz and Thompson won 6-2 at #2 and Geren and McCutchen won 6-0 at #3.
In singles, Ribeiro (#2) and Burgey (#6) led with double bagel wins, 6-0, 6-0 while Diaz (#1) and Sims (#3) only dropped one game apiece winning 6-0, 6-1. Geren then won 6-4, 6-3 at the 4 line while Thompson won 6-1, 3-6, and 14-12 in a tiebreaker during a marathon match at #5 singles.
Columbia improves to 4-2 on the season with the wins while extending their win streak to three straight matches. They will now return home to host Truett McConnell on Tuesday at 2:00 pm.
