Koala Volleyball Host CIU in 2021 Home Opener
Columbia, SC -- After a solid opening weekend, the Columbia College (SC) volleyball team returns home to host cross-town rival Columbia International University (CIU) Thursday, Sept. 9. The first serve is 6:30 p.m. in a Porter Gymnasium on the Columbia College campus.
Thursday contest is the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) and home-opener for the Koalas.
Admission is free for Columbia College students, faculty, and staff with Columbia College ID. The cost for all other spectators is $5 (cash only, exact change is preferred).
As a reminder, face coverings that cover the nose and mouth while indoors is required for all fans, both vaccinated and unvaccinated.
Columbia College went 1-3 over its opening weekend. The Koalas split their matches Friday, falling 3-0 to host Bob Jones and bouncing back to defeat Agnes Scott, 3-1. The Koalas dropped its final game of the weekend 3-0 to Methodist University on Saturday.
For the weekend, the Koalas recorded 70 kills with 66 assists and 127 digs. Freshman Jordan Coates paced Columbia College, finishing the weekend with 15 kills, 29 assists, 25 digs, and three total blocks for 28 points.
Freshman Brhia Cummings and senior Brianna King finished with 10 kills each. Freshmen Amiri Mason and Ta'Cori Barber recorded 26 and 25 digss, respectively.
The CIU Rams bring a 4-4 overall record into Thursday's contest.
The Rams, who have not played since August 28, defeated Talladega College 3-0 last time out.
Kira Rymer leads CIU offensively with 83 kills (3.19 k/s) on the season.
The Koalas will hit the road this Saturday, Sept. 11, when they travel to Waleska, Ga. to take on Reinhardt in an AAC contest.
Note: The Koalas' junior varsity team will precede the varsity contest at 4:30 p.m.
