Volleyball Sweeps Montreat for First Win
Swannanoa, N.C. - The Columbia College volleyball team went on the road and swept AAC foe Montreat College 3-0 to pick up their first win of the season on Friday evening.
The Koalas won 25-22, 25-12, and 25-20 and totaled 37 kills while hitting .176 with 48 digs. Montreat managed just 25 kills making 21 erorrs and hitting just .041 percent. Columbia recorded an impressive 15 kills in the first set hitting .200 before notching nine kills in the second and 13 in the third.
Columbia had three ladies finish with nine kills apiece combining for 27 total as senior middle blocker Destiny Brown, and outside hitters Kameron Turner and junior Maranda Bird each notched nine. Brown hit .278 with two digs and a block while the freshman Turner hit .368 with only two errors and two blocks with Bird hitting .231 with two digs.
Junior setter Debra Shephard led the team with 17 assists along with five digs and a team-best four aces while fellow setters Lilly Almada and Lottie Assen combined for 14 assists with Assen adding 7 digs. Defensive specialists, freshman Riley Koellner and junior Dani Goings along with sophomore libero Katie Roberts all combined for 24 digs with Koellner and Roberts recording nine each. Senior Middle Savanna Logan also played well tallying five kills with four digs and four blocks while sophomore OH Tamia Fripp added four kills also.
The Koalas improve to 1-8 overall and 1-0 in the conference and will next head to North Georgia to battle Truett-McConnell and Piedmont University in a tri-meet on Saturday beginning at 11:00 am.
