Men's Tennis Defeats JWU 5-2 to Open Season
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Columbia College men's tennis team opened their spring season on Saturday by defeating Johnson & Wales University 5-2 on the road Saturday.
JWU got the doubles point as they won 2 out of 3 matches against the Koalas. The top Koala team of Liam Barry and Jonah Haller fell in a tight 6-4 bout while the #2 Koala team of freshman Gabriel Kian and Waldo Bosch won easily 6-0 to tie up the match. However, the Wildcats took the last match 6-2 over the team of Tiaan Jacobs and Owen Brumfield 6-2.
In the exhibition doubles match, the team of Michael Schiesz and Andrew Broyles won 6-2.
In singles play, the Koalas dominated winning 5 of 6 matches to get the dual meet win. Recording wins were Haller, Barry, Bosch, Jacobs, and Kian. Haller won 7-5, 6-3 at the #1 spot while Barry defeated his foe 6-0, 6-4 at the #2 spot. Bosch then shut out his opponent, 6-0, 6-0 at #3 before Jacobs won 6-2, 6-3. Kian then wrapped up the win with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at #6.
During exhibition singles, CC also won both as Schiesz won 6-0 and Broyles took it 6-3.
Columbia improves to 2-0 on the year and will next head on the road to face the top team in the AAC, Tennessee Wesleyan on Friday at 2pm.
