Koala Tennis Teams Sweep JWU on Senior Day
COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Columbia College men's and women's tennis teams rolled to a senior day sweep of Johnson & Wales University in their home finale on Friday afternoon from the Koala Tennis Courts.
CC MEN 7, JWU 0
The Koala men first secured the doubles point as the top team of junior Waldo Bosch and freshman Gabriel Kian won 6-1 while the #2 team of senior Liam Barry and sophomore Jonah Haller won 6-4 to clinch the point.
In singles play, CC was led by Bosch and Barry at the top two lines each winning by identical 6-2, 6-1 scores to make the team score 3-0. Sophomore #4 Tiaan Jacobs and #5 Kian then each won 6-1, 6-1 to clinch the match for Columbia. Also victorious in singles was Haller at the 3 spot, 6-4, 6-2 and junior Owen Brumfield in the 6 spot winning a three-set thriller, 2-6, 6-3, 10-5.
CC WOMEN 7, JWU 0
The Koala women then swept all three of their doubles matches by scores of 6-2, 6-0, and 6-2 while winning five of six singles matches in straight sets. The top doubles team of senior Helena Jokanovic and junior Aniya Sims won 6-2 while the #2 team of junior Natalia Diaz and freshman Rachel Thompson won 6-0 along with the third team of sophomore Vienne Geren and freshman Camryn McCutchen also winning 6-2.
Jokanovic, Diaz then each won 6-0, 6-1 at the top two lines with Sims actually shutting out her foe, 6-0, 6-0 at the 3 spot while Thompson won 6-3, 6-1 at the 4 spot. Junior Joye Tate also won 6-4, 7-5 at the 6 spot while Geren won a three set match at the 5 spot, 6-2, 4-6, 10-2.
The Men improve to 5-8 overall while the Women go to 8-7 on the season. The Koalas will next head to Virginia to battle Southwest VA CC on Tuesday in their regular season finale before heading to the conference tournament in Tennessee on Thursday. Time and opponent set to be announced later in the week.
