Lady Koalas Settle For Scoreless Draw with Rio Grande
COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Columbia College women's soccer team had some great opportunities to score the winning goals but ultimately settled for a 0-0 tie with visiting NAIA foe, Rio Grande University (OH) at home on Sunday afternoon on the brand new turf field at Younts Stadium.
The Koalas controlled the majority of the possession in the first half with multiple scoring chances and taking a 6-3 shot advantage into the break. URG then controlled the tempo in the second half including one shot attempt that hit the post midway through the half past a diving Koala keeper. The Red Storm (1-0-2) won the second half shot count 6-5 while the Koalas won 11-9 overall.
Columbia had two terrific chances to score and take the lead late in the match as junior forward Kinzly Cohen got out on a breakaway run and beat two defenders plus the keeper, but her shot went just over the cross bar. Then in the final minute of play, CC controlled possession again and senior midfielder Kimia Hughey's last second shot bounced off the right post as Columbia had to settle for the tie.
Junior Goalkeeper Teagan Eisenring made five saves on all five shots on goal in the draw while sophomore forward Malia Kincaid attempted five shots and four on goal.
The Koalas remain unbeaten at 1-0-1 and will next go on the road for the first time on Wednesday when they head to Raleigh, NC to face Div. III opponent, William Peace University at 4:00 pm.
