CLEVELAND, Ga. - The Columbia College volleyball team, coming off their first win of the season on Friday night, went to take the first set from conference foe Truett McConnell on Saturday morning but fell in four tough sets, 1-3 from North Georgia.
The Koalas won the first set 25-23 behind 14 kills while hitting .400 but the Bears rallied back to win the next three sets by scores of 18-25, 19-25, and 13-25. Columbia totaled 46 kills and hit .151 while also recording 60 digs defensively.
Columbia's trio of defensive specialists, freshman Riley Koellner , junior Dani Goings along with sophomore libero Katie Roberts all combined for 39 digs while all three recorded double digit digs. Goings led with 15 digs and an assist while Koellner had 11 digs and an assist. Roberts posted 13 digs with 3 assists and an ace.
Leading in double-digit kills were the outside hitting duo of Kameron Turner and Tamia Fripp as they combined for 20 kills with each notching 10 apiece. Turner hit .421 with 3 digs while Fripp hit .207 with 2 digs. Freshman right side hitter Lilly Almada played well too posting 9 kills with no errors and 3 assists while senior middle Destiny Brown added 7 kills, 2 digs and a block.
Junior setter Debra Shephard registered a team-high 21 assists with 5 digs, an ace and a kill while senior setter Lottie Assen added 15 assists and five digs.
Columbia (1-9, 1-1 AAC) next played D-3 foe Piedmont University (Ga.) later Saturday from Cleveland, GA in the second match of the tri-meet. Unfortunately, PU took the win 3-0 winning by scores of 25-15, 25-19 and 25-21 over an exhausted Lady Koala team who played three matches in less than 24 hours.
Columbia was led by a season-high 22 digs from Roberts and two kills while DS' Koellner and Goings combined for 17 digs and 2 assists. Senior OH Sarah Jones led the Koalas with 9 kills while hitting .250 with an assist and two digs. Assen played well as the setter tallying 9 assists and 9 digs with two aces and a kill while fellow setter/RS Lilly Almada reocrded 11 assists and 9 dgis with 2 aces, a block and a kill. Freshman Melodi Paige also posted 4 kills, 2 digs and a block.
The Koalas will next return home to host rival CIU on Friday at 6:30 pm from the Godbold Center.
