COLUMBIA, S.C. - Columbia College added another Koala to the 2013-14 basketball team with the signing of Kaitlyn Smart on January 24th. Smart marks the third addition to the 2013-14 roster, which promises to be a young but dynamic group.
Smart, a senior at Chase High School in Forest City, NC, is currently averaging an impressive double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds per game. She first gained Coach Audas' attention through her AAU play under program director Tracy Taylor. After Kaitlyn's visit to Columbia College and Coach Audas' return visit to Chase High School, the fit became very obvious to both parties. "Kaitlyn appeared to have everything we look for in a basketball recruit. After I watching her demeanor during a game, I was convinced of it. She will be a great addition in many ways to our program," said Audas.
Chase head coach Todd Davis relies heavily on Smart to support senior point guard Kendra Holcombe. Smart, a natural post player, has above average ball handling and mobility, which Audas says will work well in her system.
"Above all, Katilyn brings exactly what we look for in a student-athlete -- great classroom discipline and a positive attitude around her team," said Audas. "I am truly excited and honor to join the Koalas' next season. The team will give me a wonderful opportunity to grow and also lead. I look forward to working hard from day one," echoed Smart.
