Columbia Picks Up Conference Win Against Reinhardt
COLUMBIA, S.C. - In a rematch of the 2011 AAC Tournament Championship game, the Columbia College Fighting Koalas defeated the visiting Reinhardt Lady Eagles with a 3-1 victory at Younts field on Wednesday evening.
After two matchups last season in which the Eagles came out on top, Columbia was determined to make a statement. After a scoreless first half in which a Reinhardt player was sent off, early in the second half the Koalas opened the scoring. After good work down the right hand side from Clare Williamson, Heather Moore took a shot from a tight angle which squeezed in at the near post to make the score 1-0.
Minutes later it was 2-0, as freshman Alexa Zolman was taken down in the box, and Jessica Martinez buried her ninth goal of the season in ten games. The Eagles responded shortly after with a goal from Krista Barikos, but Columbia answered two minutes later. Williamson again played a part, as her run down the left earned the Koalas a corner, and Ashley Forehand's cross was headed home by senior Emily Harris to restore the two goal advantage.
Columbia held the shots advantage at 29-13, while Lauren Zarefoss and Elise Grider combined to make 12 out of the 13 possible saves in the match.Up next for the Fighting Koalas is another tough conference match, as Columbia travels to Union for a 1 PM kickoff Saturday.
