Volleyball Goes Undefeated at Brevard College

The Columbia College volleyball team played three matches on Saturday and turned in a perfect performance defeating Virginia Intermont College, Coker College, and Brevard College in three sets.

The Fighting Koalas found their rhythm Saturday as they came away with three victories.  Columbia College first defeated Virginia Intermont College 25-22, 25-8, 25-10.  The Koalas had a balanced attack and recorded 32 kills with only 11 errors to hit .256 as a team.

Immediately following the first match, the Koalas turned around to play nearby Division II member Coker College.  Columbia College came out strong from the start and played to a three set victory 25-17, 25-12, 25-22.  The Koalas defense frustrated Coker's offense and limited Cobras to hitting -.096 as a team.  For Columbia College, freshman Jennifer Monroe had her second strong match of the day recording 8 kills on only 13 attempts, while senior libero Danielle Gutierrez led the defense with 18 digs in only three sets.

The final match of the day was between Columbia College and host Brevard College.  Brevard College entered the match 5-1 on the season, but were surprised by Columbia College who came out with a three set victory 25-22, 25-22, 25-17.  The first two sets were close with Brevard leading late into the sets until the serving of Columbia College pushed them past the host Tornados.  In the first set, senior Danielle Gutierrez served 5 straight points to push Columbia College in front 23-20 to the eventual 25-22 finish.  In the second set, freshman Ashli Bunch scored on 4 straight serves to give the Koalas the eventual lead 22-19.  The final set saw the Koalas use the momentum to defeat Brevard 25-17.  Freshman Ashil Bunch led the Koalas with 11 kills and 1 error on 20 attempts.

The victories pushed Columbia College's record to 6-2 on the young season.  Head coach, Brian Solomon said, "Today showed our team that when we put the work in and stay focused we can play at a very high level.  Brevard is a very good team and today was a great step forward for our program."
