Columbia Stuns Lady Barons

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Fighting Koalas stunned SSAC rival Brewton-Parker College in game two of the doubleheader with a 2-0 shutout. Coming off the biggest win in program history against Lee University, the Columbia College softball team won behind the pitching of freshman Alexis Lucas.

Lucas pitched a brilliant game giving up only 2 hits and earning the first shut out of her college career. The solid fielding of Columbia College was lead by Senior; Symone Nettles who tallied 6 put outs with a total fielding percentage of .875. Scoreless after 5 innings, Columbia sparked an offensive stretch which was ignited by junior Brittany Koester’s solo homerun. This marks her 4th homerun of the season.

Batting 3rd for Columbia was Nettles who reached first on a walk. Following Nettles, junior Kacie Davenport doubled deep to right field. Davenport leads the Fighting Koala offensively with a batting average of .321. Brittany Bendt, batting 5th in the lineup, singled to center bringing in Nettles to score for the Fighting Koalas giving Columbia a 2-0 lead.

It took Lucas facing five batters in the top of the 7th to complete the shutout when Lady Baron Heather Synder grounded out to the Lucas.

The Fighting Koalas are currently 6-8 in the conference and face Emmanuel College this weekend in a conference doubleheader.
