Softball Celebrates Family Day
COLUMBIA, S.C. - Columbia College (6-12, 2-2) celebrated family day Saturday at Sutton Softball Field. Coming off of a conference opening split against Emmanuel College (6-12, 1-3) on Friday, including a 15-7 win in game 2, the Koalas split again Saturday against Southern Wesleyan University (1-17, 1-3).
Columbia opened the weekend against the Emmanuel Lady Lions and spilt the two game series. The Fighting Koalas struggled to generate offense in the first game of the series having only 1 run. Freshman Brittany Barr struggled against the Lions giving up 5 earned runs. Emmanuel went on to win the first game of the series 7-1.
The Fighting Koalas returned focused for the second game of the series and registered a season high 15 runs. Samantha Santoro hit a two run home run to finish the game in the 6th inning and finished the game 2-of-3 with 3 RBI's and 3 runs scored.
Saturday's series saw game 1 go to Columbia behind the pitching of freshman Brittany Barr. Barr rebounded from Friday's tough outing and delivered 7 innings giving up 4 hits, 6 walks and 1 earned run. Symone Nettles hit her first homerun, and ended the game with 2 hits, 2 RBI's and 1 run scored. Game 2 went back and forth behind four homeruns. Allison Drody and Kayla Galloway both batted one over the fence for the Warriors, as did Barr and Nettles for the second time Saturday for the Koalas.
Columbia trailed 5-3 to start the bottom of the 6th inning. With one 1 run already in to cut the lead to 4-5, Barr delivered her key homerun as a pinch hitter, giving Columbia a 6-5 lead. However, the visitors plated 2 in the top of the 7th and shut out Columbia to hold on for their first conference win.
The Koalas will enjoy a short spring break and return to action next Saturday, March 12, at Virginia Intermont College.
